Cat Quotations

“If there is one spot of sun spilling onto the floor, a cat will find it and soak it up.”
J.A. McIntosh

“It is impossible for a lover of cats to banish these alert, gentle, and discriminating little friends, who give us just enough of their regard and complaisance to make us hunger for more.”
Agnes Repplier

“Of all the toys available, none is better designed than the owner himself. A large multipurpose plaything, its parts can be made to move in almost any direction. It comes completely assembled, and it makes a sound when you jump on it.”
Stephen Baker

Who was Hamilton?

Hamilton was a stray who, when he came to us in 2003, had a large open wound which stretched all the way round the back of his neck. This wound was the result of fighting, which was probably because Hamilton had not been neutered. The wound took many months and many veterinary visits to heal.

Hamilton was well loved by people and cats alike. One of the things that made him stand out were his massive feet and his extra toes. He had two extra toes on each front foot and an extra one on each back foot, making a total of 24! Cats usually have a total of 18 toes (five on each front paw and four on each back paw). This is caused by a congenital abnormality known as Polydactyly.

Polydactyl cats are also known as “mitten cats”, “thumb cats” or “Hemingway cats”, called after the writer, Ernest Hemingway, who had a colony of Polydactyl cats in his home in Key West, Florida.

Unfortunately, Hamilton passed away in 2007, aged 9, but as his story is typical of the stray and unwanted cats needing our help, we felt it was only fitting to name the Fund after him.
